Skin Tags and Warts Differences

Warts resemble skin tags; however, they are not the same in all aspects. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus triggers too much skin cell growth, causing warts to appear. In general, warts do not cause any pain; however, plantar warts on the feet may cause discomforts. Among people, warts can be contagious. They can be spread from person to person by touching a certain object that a person with wart may have touched.

Skin Tags

Skin tags are skin growths that hang off the skin which can look as if they are attached. They can occur in any part of the body covered by skin. They can come in varying size and color. Also known as acrochordon, skin tags are more likely to occur in the neck, groin area, armpit and eyelids.  They are common in the middle age individuals; however, they can occur on much younger people as well. The formation of skin tags can be increased by hormone elevations as these skin growths are common to pregnant women. They are harmless and can be removed either by the help of dermatologists or at home.

Visual Differences between Warts and Skin Tags

While, there is no explanation why people get skin tags, warts are caused by the HPV virus. Skin tags are tiny piece of skin that protrudes off the body which may have irregular shape. Warts have more cylindrical in shape and their texture is different compared to skin tags. Skin tags have the same color as the skin or have a little darker shade while warts come in various colors such as pink or deeper shades and can be clustered. Skin tags and warts are harmless and are relatively common. They are both not pleasant to the eyes and don’t give appeal to anyone who has them.
